He highlighted that Gujarat is already home to major global automakers such as Suzuki, Tata, and Ford. While specific details were not disclosed, Patel mentioned that an official announcement is expected “soon.”
Following this revelation, media reports are speculating that the formal announcement could occur during the Vibrant Gujarat 2024 summit, scheduled to commence on January 10, 2024.

Reports from Ahmedabad Mirror suggest that the official announcement regarding Tesla’s manufacturing facility in the state is anticipated during the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit scheduled for the next month.
Gujarat, already housing manufacturing units of automakers like Maruti Suzuki, is speculated to be a potential location for Tesla’s plant, with Sanand, Becharaji, and Dholera being considered.
Despite media speculation, there has been no official announcement from either Tesla or the state government on this matter.
During a recent Cabinet briefing, Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel expressed optimism about Elon Musk’s investment in Gujarat. Tesla’s interest in building a factory in India, producing a low-cost electric vehicle priced at around $24,000 (INR 19.87 Lakhs), was previously expressed. This model aims to be approximately 25% cheaper than Tesla’s current entry model for both the Indian market and export.

Additionally, reports indicate that Tesla has leased office space in Pune, with plans to bring some of its Chinese vendors to India following discussions with Indian officials. Gujarat, with its advantageous location and favorable business environment, has emerged as the “preferred destination for Tesla’s manufacturing plans.” The state government has proposed Sanand, Becharaji, and Dholera as potential sites for Tesla’s manufacturing plant, as per Ahmedabad Mirror. This concession was requested as a condition for constructing a plant in the country, with the reduced tariffs applying to all EV manufacturers.
India’s EV market has substantial growth potential, with expectations of achieving over 40% penetration and generating $100 billion in revenue by 2030. The growth is projected to be driven by strong adoption in both two-wheeler and three-wheeler categories, with cars expected to contribute to more than 20% penetration, according to a recent report by Bain & Company and Blume Ventures.
